With points for the Sunday race being unchanged, this gives a total of 777 points on offer over the season. The remaining places will be awarded 6,5,4,3,2 and 1 point respectively. Sprint races will be run over half the respective race distance and points will be awarded to the top nine riders only, with 12 points for a win, 9 for second and 7 for third. Combined with an extension of the season, now fought over 9 month and twenty-one rounds, the introduction of the sprint races will certainly make the 2023 champion work hard for the title. Joining the ranks for WSBK and F1, MotoGP introduced the Sprint Race to both reinvigorate interest in the sport after a drop in viewing figures, but also to offer better value to fans, offering two days of fast paced action. Upon seeing the chequered flag and crossing the finish line, drivers are required to slow to a safe speed, and return to their garage, parc fermé, or paddock, depending on the applicable regulations of the series.2023 sees perhaps the most fundamental shake up to the MotoGP schedule with the introduction of the Saturday Sprint Race. The flag is commonly associated with the winner of a race, as they are the first driver to "take" (in other words, drive past) the chequered flag. At some circuits, the first flag point will display a repeat chequered flag (usually on the opposite side of the circuit). The chequered flag (or checkered flag) is displayed at the start/finish line to indicate that the race is officially finished. Alternatively, some race tracks employ lights to supplement the primary flag at the start/finish line. Track marshals are also stationed at observation posts along the race track in order to communicate both local and course-wide conditions to drivers. Typically, the starter, sometimes the grand marshal of a race, waves the flags atop a flag stand near the start/finish line. Racing flags are traditionally used in auto racing and similar motorsports to indicate track condition and to communicate important messages to drivers.
